I have never heard, used or seen a DBX 266XL in person. Still I can tell you to get that rather than the Alesis 3630 which is a truly ugly sounding unit. Most things that are considered 'bad' in audio are bad because they are boring, or vanilla or cheaply made. The Alesis 3630 on the other hand, actually sounds awful.
